    Description

This decorated redware plate features a delightful image and rich yellow, brown and green glazes. It is a fine example of the workmanship of the famous Pennsylvania potter, Lester Breininger, from Berks County, Pennsylvania. This whimsical redware plate measures 7” in diameter and is made of clay, the red color coming from the iron in the local clay, and is hand decorated with vibrant glazes. Each piece of Breininger pottery has an incised signature on the base either by Lester or Breininger Pottery, and a message about the day’s weather is often incised into the bottom of the piece as well. This piece is signed “Breininger Pottery – Robesonia, PA – May 17, 1999 – Overcast But Warm”. It appears to have a small crack by the cat’s mouth. Despite this flaw it is in very good condition with no other evidence of damage. It is a striking display piece that features a creatively hand-painted and humorous theme. (Stand not included)
    Note
: Lester Breininger, the artist and craftsperson who kept the Pennsylvania German redware tradition alive, was a nationally known figure who made reproduction redware pottery for 45 years. Lester established Breininger Pottery in 1965 in Robesonia, Pennsylvania, and produced pottery, china, earthenware and stoneware with Pennsylvania Dutch images and techniques that date to early America. The pottery was sold out of the family home, the Taylor Mansion. For many years, Breininger Pottery held their famous “Annual Porch Show and Sale” each August. Lester stopped signing his pottery in 2011 due to the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and the 42nd and final porch sale in 2011 marked the end of an era. Several redware pieces by this famous Pennsylvania potter have been on display in various museums across the country and since his death, signed and dated Lester Breininger pottery has gone up considerably in value.
